My dog eats their own poo - can you help?Updated 3 years ago

It's not uncommon for dogs to eat their own poo, or the poo of other animals. It’s just what they do sometimes -  even if it sounds gross

When a dog eats their own stools, the scientific term commonly used is Coprophagia.

This behaviour can be categorised into three main reasons:

  1. Medical - there are certain conditions that can cause your dog to eat his own poo
  2. Behavioural - some dogs have an obsessive/compulsive-like need to clean up after themselves
  3. Extrinsic/Environmental - your dog may be responding to nutritional deficiencies by going back for more

Only dogs know why they do it – we are left guessing. Nevertheless, if your dog doesn’t seem well, please have them seen by your vet.
